December 2011 Preview: Hands on with Downpour (New Screens!) and Book of Memories

January 4th, 2012 | 12:04 am   Memo left By: Whitney

Early in December I attended a Konami press event in San Fransisco and had the opportunity to try Silent Hill Downpour, Silent Hill Book of Memories and the HD Collection and talk with Silent Hill producer Tomm Hulett. I already played through most of the HD Collection back in September so I used my time to play-through Downpour and briefly try Book of Memories. Unfortunately, unlike my Downpour hands on preview last September, I could not record myself playing so no accompanying video preview this time around!

Head over to my site to read my preview!

Silent Haven’s interview with Alex Tuis on the FX and Concept Team Behind Silent Hill: Revelation

December 9th, 2011 | 3:51 am   Memo left By: MonkeyX

Silent Haven got a chance to sit down and chat with FX and Concept Team behind Silent Hill: Revelation, Alex Tuis.

I have a treat for you Silent Hill fans for Fan Art Friday! I had the great opportunity to speak with Alex Tuis who worked with Paul Jones as a concept artist for the film.

Silent Haven: Hello Alex, you are signed under Silent Hill: Revelation as a concept artist. I was excited to hear you were doing concept art for the film after I saw your work. Where do you get your style or influence from and why do specifically specialize in creature design as an artist?

Alex Tuis: Over the years I have been influenced by Artists such as Frank Frazetta, John Buscema, Moebius, Katsuhiro Otomo, zdzislaw beksinski, Mike Mignola, Alex Ross, but also painters like Bouguereau, Lawrence Alma Tadema, Jean-Léon Gérôme… But when I began to draw realistic things, I tried to copy portraits of actors and shots from movies…

Slightly I realized that I was really fascinated by fantasy and horror movies, and of course the creatures, strange characters and all the bestiary inside them. And one day I discovered Steve Wang’s work, ADI creatures and others and I realize that it was a possibility to only design monsters. Which was and is still my first interest.

Silent Haven: Is there any form of art you prefer? Oil paint on canvas, charcoal, digital?

Alex Tuis: Today, I am working most of the time via Photoshop and my tablet. But I also do appreciate sketches (I using most of the time 4B graphite pencil).

I also recently tried to paint with oils, but this is not the same deal. I wish I could find more time to work with this medium. I painted a lot of things with acrylics, years ago. But today it is too much time taken for a less interesting result than what you can have with computer paintings. Except of course with oils, which really has amazing rendering.

Silent Haven: Which character did you do concept art for in Silent Hill Revelation?

Alex Tuis: On my side I have worked on the character played by Malcolm McDowell, but I have no idea if they kept my designs.

Silent Haven: I love your designs and your style. It is actually very similar to famous Silent Hill creature designer Masahiro Ito. Ito has this style where he feels that if the creatures he designs don’t stray too far from the human anatomy that they are far scarier than anything that goes too far into fantasy. Looking at your designs I get the sense that you have this similar style. Your art is not just psychologically terrifying but also disturbing which is perfect for the Silent Hill universe. It is truly a good thing to hear you apart of this film. I actually wish you did more monsters in the film. I am excited though to hear you worked on the Leonard Wolf, which is McDowell’s character.

Alex Tuis: Many thanks for your words and the comparison with Masahiro Ito.
I am not sure to have the same “spirit” when I am doing my creatures.
I am trying these days to develop a style named “Mineral Flesh” which is much more like colored version of my sketches. Often I am trying to do sexy and strange characters. It is ok if they are frightening, but I don’t have in mind that they should be…

About Leonard, I have no idea what he will look like… because just before I leave the show, someone told me that they will certainly take another direction with the character. Silent Hill wasn’t really a good experience for me, because I was really sick at this period, had a very bad cold, and I think we did not found a good way to understand each other, me and Michael J Bassett.

Silent Haven: No problem. They probably toned down your work to appeal to a wider audience which would sadden me. Were you a fan prior to your work on Silent Hill: Revelation or were you asked to join?

Alex Tuis: It was my choice to work on Silent Hill*. I tried to contact Samuel Hadida the next day I saw the first movie in theaters.
So, years after when I learned that they had the green light for a second movie, I contacted them.
I am a fan of Silent Hill. I like this universe. I like the characters, their failures, their erotic tense and the background behind them.
There is also a “mystery smoke” all around this place, and not only the fog in the street, there is always a strange diabolical atmosphere in the game, and I like that.
The score is also perfect…how is it possible to forget the first theme in the first game?
A hit for sure….

Silent Haven: Were you given any direction for designing Leonard or did you take inspiration from anything from Silent Hill?

Alex Tuis: Designing Leonard was particular..because during the first step, I did my own stuff, based on pictures of the game. Then they realized they were most interested in re designing the sketches Rob Mc Callum’s has made for the story board. So I worked around different versions and interpretation of Rob’s design for Leonard. Today I have no idea how he looks like, because Paul Jones rebuilt him with his own touch. It will also be a surprise for me.

But anyway… once the movie is released, I will post my designs and we will see if they look better than what they have chosen. Search for alextuis on Facebook… I have my latest designs here.

The Order is in Revelation!

November 28th, 2011 | 10:43 am   Memo left By: Whitney

Michael J Bassett, the director up the upcoming Silent Hill Revelation has been answering some fan questions on his blog and revealed that The Order will be the the antagonist of the film:

Jillian: I’ve a couple of questions, if you get any time to answer them. :) Is the Order in SHR, or is it just the cult from the first film? Do you have an idea on the rating yet?

Michael J. Bassett: It is The Order and not the cult from SH1. And no, I don’t know what the rating will be – it depends what country you’re in.

This may seem like a “no duh” considering Revelation is based on Silent Hill 3 but it’s nice to have confirmation from Bassett that we will see the Order and not the return of the wacky Christian cult from the first movie!

It’s Official! Original VA for Silent Hill 2 in the HD Collection…but not Silent Hill 3

November 22nd, 2011 | 5:03 pm   Memo left By: Whitney

Today Tomm Hulett posted on the Official Silent Hill Facebook page that yes Silent Hill 2 will have its original recordings from 2001 but unfortunately Silent Hill 3 will not :(

We’re proud to announce that Silent Hill HD Collection will offer an option for original voices in Silent Hill 2. This means fans and newcomers alike can experience the classic horror tale remastered with modern voice performances; as well as the original recordings from 2001. Producer Devin Shatsky and I have been striving to make this a reality for some time, and it’s exciting to have created the definitive SH2 experience. We would like to thank all of the original voice cast as well as Jeremy Blaustein, who were all instrumental in making this happen. Unfortunately, due to factors both technical and logistical, Silent Hill 3 will be presented with new voices only. Konami and Hijinx are working hard to make Silent Hill HD Collection a valued piece of Silent Hill history, and hope fans new and old look forward to its release in January.

Sincerely,

Tomm Hulett

Guy Cihi – HD Collection on Schedule and the Search for Heather!

November 21st, 2011 | 9:05 pm   Memo left By: Whitney

Last week the original voice actors of Silent Hill 2, Guy Cihi (James), Monica Taylor Horgan (Mary/Maria) and Dave Schaufele (Eddie) met with Konami Producers Devin Shatsky and Tomm Hulett for some “pizza and beers” in LA. As someone whose been following the HD voice of controversy over the past few months I was so stoked to see such a happy resolution with both sides talking and having a good time. Monica and Guy both posted some fun pictures from the meet up on their respective facebook pages and it looked like everyone had a blast!

Late this afternoon Guy Cihi posted an update regarding the meet up with the team week and the status of the HD collection. According to Guy, the HD Collection is on schedule for its January 2012 release and happily all the major actors for Silent Hill 2 have signed releases… so we will have the option to choose between the new and the old voices! Unfortunately, there seems to be a problem with getting the same for Silent Hill 3

Guy says this is because Konami has been unable to locate/contact Heather Morris, the original voice actress for Heather, and the protagonist of Silent Hill 3. If they can’t get into contact, she can’t sign a rights, meaning the HD game will not be able to include the original voice work.

This is a real bummer to hear. Hopefully Heather can be found soon…maybe they should hire Douglas to track her down? ;)
